Kundan Lal : Ok Boss, Suno Boss [ynFree 020]

“Filmi (Hinglish, lit. ‘of films’) music has always been an integral part of Indian cinema. Protagonists sing, villains don’t. Fusing genres and interpolating western influences was notably common during the golden age of 50s-70s. Songs have been diverse & experiment-happy. Psychedelic atmospheres were hot, even scratches & synthesizers appeared on the scene.

Half a century later, Kundan Lal digs up these classic vinyl records from the backyards of Delhi, Marrakech or Cairo, and feeds his sampler with microsequences, cuts and loops from those Original Sound Tracks. Injecting some acid synths, cascaded strings, fundamental horns, electronic percussion, dub delays and his trademark field recordings from rogue states as a salute of worship. All pumped through a worn-out, shabby speaker.”
