Dr.Nojoke : Clusters & Clouds [KSR035]

“There’s something to be said about having your head in the clouds, as long as they’re the kind produced by Berlin based artist Dr.Nojoke. For his first release under ‘Klangscheiben’, the doctor weaves his signature plethora of handmade sounds into a four-track composition fittingly dubbed Clusters & Clouds. Among the array of textural beats live ghostly reverberating vocals and lo-fi ambiance, as in ‘Autistic Cloud’ and ‘Homeless Cloud’, the latter distilled even further under labelmate Sven Laux’s touch. ‘Klorren’ balances dense, undulating rhythms with a trace of mysticism. Call it cumulotechno.”

Kae Uh : Keep Forgetting EP [STO012]

“New release in March, Kae Uh, our rookie from Los Angeles, has created an EP that nicely represents his new American style. His music is a mixture of trap with rap vocals, intricate hi-hats and constantly evolving Garage rhythms. It’s like riding along an ocean of rhythms in a convertible. Ozaka got into the convertible to deliver his own remix, accelerating the speed as his atmospheric tune carries us away. Ryuei Kotoge envelops us in a soundscape, ready for another trip, taking you through a mesmerizing, energetic, Japanese cityscape.”

Sven Laux : Microscopy [KSR034]

“Whoever said ‘good things come in small packages’ must have been talking about Sven Laux’s microcomposition. A leader in this new wave of music, Laux’s is a particular breed of minimal that you have to think about to truly understand. Listen at a distance, and it’s the kind of skittering beats that have earned Laux titles like ‘micro symphonist’. Listen closely, and you can hear every intricate cog turning. Ever a lover of the obscure and the weird, Laux swings from animated min tech to moments of languid ambience with ease, as evidenced in his latest effort, KSR034. The five-track release under Klangscheiben Records pairs peculiar samplings and interjections with those signature clicks, beeps, and small sounds. Micro symphony, indeed.”

Axs : Midnight Secrets [BC25C]

“For the third and final installment of his Secrets series, Axs gives RP Midnight Secrets. Perhaps alluding to the feeling one gets after being awake for far too long, Midnight Secrets is probably the weirdest and most experimental of the three volumes (and admittedly Axs’ favorite as well). Where Rosewood established the roots of the Axs canon, and Evergreen painted vivid landscapes with that exposition, Midnight succeeds in pulling the Axs sound further forward, with obtuse synth gardens like ‘Nightshade’ (a track that could easily fit into the stark sound-art of Raster-Noton or even some of Mika Vainio’s records) and the house-inflected piano and upright bass dub of ‘Shift Anomaly’ (which recalls producers like Terre Thaemlitz and Jeff Mills). ‘Swamp Politics’ features a wobbly squarewave lead and aching pad that sort of reminds us of a dubbier version of Autechre’s Amber era, and ‘Static Space’ feels loose and shaky, as if the foundations of the rhythm itself are pulling apart as the track moves forward. Closing with the bright and spacious ‘Endloop’, Axs seems to say that even after three extensive archive releases, he still has a lot of sonic exploration to do. Sharing secrets has never felt so good, and we’re already looking forward to the next aural excursion that awaits our ears from Axs.”
