Agent J : Groovement – Volume One

“Groovement // Volume One compiles music from some of the best underground beatmakers in the UK (and a few raps too), plus contributions from Santiago de Chile, California and Toronto. Compiled by Groovement’s Agent J (aka Jamie Groovement) and released as a free download on the fledgling LabelGroovement, it’s the first in an ongoing series.

“The project the fine art of despair is a combination of music and bukowski reading his poetry. This album was produced entirely during 2 weeks of june back in 2010. The inspiration for it came in a dark period and it’s atsmosphere reflects it. It is a mixture of sample-based hip-hop, downtempo, trip-hop, poetry, heavy use of cognac and beer, and last but not least a bunch of obsessions… An obsession with Vincent Price, with heavy nineties hip hop drums and of course, an obsession with bukowski’s writings. For a better acoustic experience combine it with low lighting and a brandy & orange juice cocktail… Cheers!”

Hello friends and dub techno lovers out there.

We started this competition by simply asking artists to produce tracks that would fit to a big garden full of echos. The response was amazing. We recieved a lot of tracks. Outstanding tracks. We started and kept collecting tracks until the day of the deadline. Martin and me made a deal: we would not listen to any of the tracks before having gathered all of them such that we would not make any preselection but give each track the same chance. Imagine, it was very hard to do so. The day after the deadline, Martin and i just met to discuss and evaluate the tracks. During the entire night, we listened to the tracks without looking at artist names just to be as unbiased as possible until it was done. We selected the sweetest sounds for echogarden and those tracks that are somehow connected to each other. We had so much fun while listening to the sounds – the tracks blew us completely away. Amazing!! Therefore we want to thank everyone who sent us a track and we also want to thank those artists, that are finally not on the list. I really have to say that again, it was just about making a choice of what sounds build a great connection. Nothing else.

Also, our special thanks go to ‘Salz’ and his wonderful mastering.
Specially when it comes to dub-techno, mastering by Salz is a masterpiece.

Med Dred : Dred reggae EP [DPH004]

“Dubophonic has turned toward Cyprus this time and to the local artists, introducing one of the most active Cypriot artists in the reggae scene. Producer & riddim maker Med Dred has always been into music, addicted from the young age of 7, a good 20+ years ago! He is one of those artists, who are passionate with their music. Studied in the United Kingdom City & Guilds (Sound Engineer), the Cypriot artist then went off to further his studies with a Bachelor’s Degree in Texas and a Master’s Degree in the UK at the Trinity Southern University. He has been refining his sound ever since.

‘Reggae has always been my passion as I was brought up in Brixton and went school there so my musical influence has always been a heavy bassline on a reggae riddim. Some of my mentors are: The Scientist, King Tubby, Black Uhuru, Mad Professor, Sly & Robbie, Bob Marley, Eek a Mouse, Gregory Isaacs … and too many more Kings, not enough room here to mention! On his debut release on Dubophonic netlabel, Med Dred introduces a style that is deeply rooted in the history of reggae music. Inspired by the old dub masters and sound engineers of Jamaica, Med Dred manages to assimilate their sound and transform it into something new, either by incorporating his own custom made effects, improvising on the melodica or using his voice snippets to send out his anti-Babylon messages.

The Dred Reggae EP includes six tracks, dubbed and remixed by Med Dred exclusive for the Dubophonic netlabel. Heavy one drops, deep echoes and reverbs, heart pounding bass lines and conscious lyrics are the ingredients of his musical recipe. Accompanied by many guests, Med Dred creates his own personal sound, still remaining true to the original roots of reggae music.

Special participation of Ted Sirota (drums) on ‘Jahnoy’, Felix Dub Caravan (bass) on ‘Jahnoy’ and ‘Dub-o-phonic words’, Christopher Pound and Tian (bass) on ‘Bal Ed Dred’ and Peter Attah (vocals) on ‘Attah Dred’.”
