The Dubwegians : King of Dub [DPH041]

“Two years after their first release South Of the River Clyde in 2018, the Scottish duo Gary Lamont and Richy Clark return with a second EP with more reworks of some of their favourite dub tracks. These reworks were written back in 2013 but never received the respect they deserved, suffering from lack of attention.

In this second EP entitled King Of Dub, they concentrate on the works of King Tubby, using the same approach recording wise as in South Of The River Clyde, trying to emulate some great King Tubby masterpieces. Richy played guitar, Garry played bass and covered all other sounds and the production, but this time the duo was enriched with the addition of Ian Borthwick on the drums.

That was the second and apparently the last try of The Dubwegians to establish themselves as a dub band. Unfortunately the project that Richy dreamed off in 2013, never really managed to pull off. It kind of fizzled out after a while as people came and went. Up for a jam and some good time but not up for putting in the hours of practice needed. We thought it would be nice to share these tunes, done a long time ago, and give them another lease of life! We hope you enjoy them!”

The Dubbstyle : Sun Is Dub [DPH037]

“The Argentinean dub monkeys are back! After being included in the compilation Explorations In Dub (2013), their guest appearance on the Red Star Martyr’s album Time for Tea (2014) and the release of their own album Simona (2015), the brothers Mauro and Federico Salina from Mentoza (ARG) are back with more vibrations.

Their new album is entitled Sun Is Dub and includes eight musical dub-works. Compared to their previous works, their 2019 sound is much more mature, which is normal for every artist who respect his work and strives to evolve.

Starting with Navidub and following with Combination (with a vocal sample of the classic Indian singer Shruti Katkar) the album is a journey into the dub sounds and the cultures of the world. Sometimes melodic and organic, other times rhythmical and heavyweight, the dub is to be heard in all eight tunes of the album. The last track Simona, is a reference to their previous album, newly re-done ft. Unidub Estereo.”

Dub Riots & Indamouse ft. Bluez : Creation [DPH036]

Dub Riots were formed in 2008 in Athens, Greece. They have been featured on a few compilations on Dubophonic (Explorations in Dub 2013, Legal Rmx 2016 and Reggae Sunjam Vol.I 2017 and Vol II 2018) and also on the Greek label Reggaewise with their first EP State Of Life in 2013.

Having performed live as a dub duo all over Greece, but also in Cyprus, Belgium and Switzerland, it was about time to release their second EP and their first one on the label, doing their own dub-manipulations of some of the greatest reggae anthems.

On this release they meet Indamouse aka 3voice, another member of the Reggaewise crew based as well in Athens; a selector and producer influenced by the Jamaican soundsystem culture and the UK stepper style. Alongside the mystical sound of Bluez on the melodica, they offer a fresh conception of well established tunes like Creation, Rat A Cut Bottle and A Still Tongue, tribute to the foundation artists of reggae music. We hope you enjoy them!”

The Dubwegians : South of the River Clyde [DPH035]

The Dubwegians where founded in the UK back in 2010, when Gary had the idea of starting a dub band. He, therefore, approached his old school friend Richy, whose guitar skills were always thought highly of. He just wanted to play bass in the band and not do any producing.

Gary remembers: ‘We tried to capture the energy of a live band. In the absence of a drummer, it was a struggle for us to use a software, trying to capture the original warmth of analogue dub. It was a real learning experience; listening and trying to emulate these dub masterpieces. We have never done dub producing before and were slowly realizing some of the techniques used.’

South of the River Clyde includes 5 instrumental tracks; dub reworks of some great roots reggae masterpieces, produced back in 2011 with love and lots of passion. Richy played melodica and keyboards (and also guitar on “Sun is shining Dub), Gary played bass and covered all other sounds and production, using a laptop to overdub and edit their takes. Give thanks to Robert McWilliams for granting us the license to use the photo of the river Clyde in the artwork.”

Foshan Roots : Sky Warrior Dub [DPH033]

“We are starting a new series of releases, exploring and re-discovering Springline Records, one of the most underrated reggae and dub labels. It has been operational from 2003 until 2012, releasing music on vinyl, on audio tapes and later in digital format. With artists coming mainly coming from the UK underground, the style of the label was strongly influenced by the Jamaican roots music of the 70s with a sound very kin to that of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Black Ark studio.

But the resemblance to Black Ark studio goes far more than just the sound and the music. After 10 years of operation, two vinyl releases and many tapes and digital releases the label stopped its operations. All releases were discontinued in 2013 & all master recordings were lost or destroyed or on purpose deleted/thrown away, with the owner of the label deciding to put an end to that musical adventure. What is left nowadays are some articles and reviews on the internet, reminding the era of a great label, which unfortunately did not get the recognition it deserved.

All this happened at the time when Dubophonic was just starting its own musical adventure in 2013. We don’t know if it was meant to be, if a higher force controls everything and connects everything together, but thanks to Gibsy Rhodes, owner of Springline Records, we got our hands on some crucial tunes found forgotten on a hard disc, which was saved from destruction. Ruff takes, dubplates, alternative cuts, demos and a few unreleased works; a true treasure to our ears!

Foshan RootsSky Warrior Dub is the first release from our new series entitled ‘The lost archive of Springline Records’. It was never released before, until today! Enjoy the deep rootikal vibrations of Foshan Roots. The way of the peaceful warriors!”

Negritage : Greetings from Planet Dub [DPH031]

“Four years ago, back in 2013, the Argentinian dubbers Negritage made their first appearance on the label with Guetto Roots of Dub Vol. 1, an album recorded in ‘Cuca Roots’ and in ‘El Fuerte Dub Foundation’ studios, exploring the Jamaican roots and culture dub tradition. Their analogue style and their authentic sound was greatly appreciated by the listeners and the album remains until today the most downloaded release ever made by Dubophonic, with more than 25.000 downloads and still rising.

Fast forward today and the long awaited Vol. 2 is finally out. Greetings from Planet Dub stays true to the same roots and culture background with 6 vocal tracks and 11 dubs. Nevertheless, new elements are incorporated in their style, in which eastern melodies blend into the Jamaican vibes and the melodica meets the mandolin and the lyre like in a musical playground, were the singers and players of instruments playfully communicate through their music.”

Downbeat : Introspección [DPH029]

Downbeat is a project that mutates, changes with the time, transforms itself with life, without limits and without borders.

Their second album takes the sound a step further towards experimentation. Downbeat look at their interior and connect themselves with genres they always got inspired from: Dub, Dubtronica, Jazz and Fusion. INTROSPECTIÓN is the beating of their heart, each heartbeat navigated by a different state of mind. Looking at oneself is like a magical journey within, guided by the mystical power of the ancestral plants.

The dub sounds are present throughout the album with atmospheric musical landscapes. Nevertheless, this is not the typical dub album, trying to look like its coming out from an island … this is the dub of the mountain … the dub of the Andes … the dub of the Aconcagua … the dub of Las Heras. That’s why it’s hard, dark, cold and different. That is why it has power, hypnotism, strength and a sound of its own.

Let us navigate within ourselves, with the heart pulsating on each beat. Heavy Dub, experimental Dub, dedicated to the universe and its infinite power. A triangle for all to travel ▲ (SOUND-LIGHT-SHAPE).”

“The UK producer Stanley Woodfield, better known under the project-name Red Star Martyrs, has been one of the most active artists since the start of our label. After having released two EPs, ‘I & I’ (2013) and ‘Time for Tea’ (2014) and contributing in the compilation ‘United as One’ (2014), there was a silence for nearly 2 years. It has been a constructive silence … and today we are happy to announce his first long player. We have been saving this one for you to be our last release of 2016. ”

Eter Dub offers a new fresh breeze in dub music. His sound cannot be framed into one genre. It is definitely dub, but with references not only to his classical musical studies but also into jazz, which is his second nature. Each composition offers originality and an alternative approach to dub music. From the ‘linguistical’ approach on Hand Of Jah, to the slow and wild ‘Ras-Sax’, from the funk-jazzy ‘Jah Trax 5’ to the adventurous ‘Jah Jah Love’, all seven tracks of the EP build a new concept of dub music.”

Mastermind XS : Keep on moving [DPH025]

Mastermind XS is a dub-project from Saarbrucken/Germany, created by Daniel Stephan (guitar, bass, keyboard, programming, sitar) and Heiko Petry (vocals, lyrics, melodica, keyboard). Their music is based on a solid dub foundation: heavy basslines with conscious lyrics and deeply rooted dub & reggae with an interesting twist, integrating many influences such as electro, ethnic music, drum/n/bass and even indie or punk. Their sound unites different styles, which hardly fits into one single genre and are always exploring new musical spaces, combining their Ableton skills and live instruments, forming a unique ear-candy-mixture of grooves.”
