Devennue : Forms [bsc_043]

“Madrid based dub techno producer and Kraftmann Records label owner Devennue delivers a sublime four track EP for basic_sounds called Forms, including one remix by proclaimed dub techno aficionado, Overcast Sound. The compositions on Forms are different yet combine a common thread of continuity. Devennue thrives to demonstrate how concepts can be interrupted in different ways.

The opening track ‘Thearforms’, is a quiet meditative ambient soundscape that subtly introduces tranquil elements to float the listener along. Devennue switches pace with ‘Underforms’ an ambient dub journey combined with tension building organic percussion sounds, ultimately creating a more anxious composition. ‘Subforms’, the third number is saturated with pads and soft distant strings that roll-out into a slow, bass groove that slowly dissolves into idyllic airy landscape. Overcast Sound closes the release with a remix of ‘Underforms’. Michael Pettit transforms the original work by producing something ready to make you move on the dancefloor.”

“American experimental sound artist Specta Ciera (aka Devin Underwood) has released several albums on Distance Recordings, Project 168, Secret Station, Circles and Lines Recordings, Luxus-Arctica Records, Earth Mantra Netlabel and Audio Gourmet. For basic_sounds, Underwood delivers Scarlet Hill, an impeccable dub techno release full of subtle grooving organic beauty.

Opening track, ‘Day 1’ combines field recordings of rain, textured rhythm structures and warm dubby percussion layers. ‘Day 2’ is a soft organic track with trickling percussion sounds, distance echoes, warm cymbals and sophisticated rhythm arrangements. ‘Day 3’ is a rolling dub techno track with pulsing baselines that propel the listener forward. Brilliant, polished, head-bopping bedroom track. ‘Day 4’ is a deep floating dub techno work with light airy chords, combined with a chunky swagger, and swirling ambient details. ‘Day 5’ is a haunting dub ambient track that takes it down a notch and incorporates reverberating vocals for the first time. ‘Day 6’ is a mature grooving dub techno number with melodic organic nuances and shuffles. ‘Day 7’ closes the release on a high with yet another uplifting dub composition incorporating harmonious bells and throbbing pulses. “basic_sounds is proud to present Broken, Michael Pettit’s second exquisite piano-driven house album under his Chord moniker. Primarily known for his deep dub soundscapes as Overcast Sound, Broken shifts him closer to the sacred productions of Bruno Pronsato or Francis Harris, demonstrating his mastery of craft and individual approach to structure and composition. Technically each track compliments the next and acts as a continuation of his first release, Year As A Ghost.

‘Hanging On To What I Know’ opens the EP with sentimental piano melodies and nostalgic crackles, alluding to the past with elements of uplifting beauty and optimism through his skillfully placed beat structure. The title track, ‘Broken’ is a somber number with organic breaths, vocal snippets and fluid percussion transitions. ‘This Distance Is Your Disappointment’ is an honest and melancholy modern classical piece with delicate fuzzy distortion. Closing the release, ‘Doesn’t Change’ begins with a trudging pace, as if one is walking through crunchy snow. Bite : Room [bsc_038]

“Multi-talented Spanish producer and videographer José Barrera (aka Bite) delivers Room, his second outstanding EP for basic_sounds. Known for his dark immersive ambient drones Bite delivers a passionate balance between eerie and warmth.

The first titled track, ‘Room 01’ is a dark, contemplative soundscape with digital organic quirks combined with buzzing, alluding to bleak feelings regarding the state of the world. This concept is reinforced in Barrera’s video. ‘Room 02’ is another eerie track with slow static pulses and alien-like rattlesnake sounds, ultimately creating a deep immersive environment. ‘Room 03’ is a calming warm ambient track with delicate floating synth strings combined with field recordings of rain and birds. ‘Room 04’ is an other-worldly dub track with pulsating pads and distant reverberations. Closing this release, ‘Room 05’ is a clinical, Raster Noton style track with reductive clicks and whirrs juxtaposed with warm pulsing pads. Overall, another stunning polished release from Bite.”

Joel Pryde : Aurresku [bsc_037]

“Seattle based producer, videographer and software developer Joel Pryde, graces basic_sounds with his third and most emotive work to date. Known for his inspiring dancefloor sets, Joel delivers a harmonious, modern, slightly trippy deep tech-house release with Aurresku.

Opening with the self-titled track ‘Aurresku’, is a Basque folk dance of courtship in which the men present lively acrobatic displays for their lovers. Extremely melodic, ‘Aurresku’ opens with trippy tingling tickles that entertain your mind while building up to a more full and well-crafted rolling production with gliding synths and cymbal drum claps. ‘Lasting’ takes it up a notch, with building, driving percussive sounds melded with a bass hook, and infectious shuffles that evolve into a sensuous optimistic track with rising strings and compelling piano chords. Overall another brilliant EP from Joel Pryde, who continues to amaze and remain on top of his game.”

The self-titled opening track is a deep, meditative, spacey-dub track guided by pensive trance-like pulses and eerie alien sound effects. ‘Voxtrap’ is propelled forward by a steady 4/4 beat, integrating melodic spiraling chords and light cotton-coated synth pads for the ultimate airy dub journey. Closing track, ‘Nachtfahrt’ is an infectious upbeat immersive dub groove incorporating echoing cords, distant crackles, panning effects and uplifting vocal samples.
