Sub.Made : Memories [SP16]

“SP16 – Memories marks the second release by Sub.Made (Denis Marold) on Sublime Porte. This time Sub.Made returns with 3 emotional dub techno tracks. After his rather dark/experimental 4-track contribution on ‘echoes’, he now seems to showing the calmer side of his productional skills.

The start of ‘Memories’ is driven by filtered chords and bass wich later turn into a simple and minimalistic but powerfull rhythmic composition. The heavy kick just fits right into the groove and makes it very easy to listen to.
‘True Time’ calmly builds up with lush pads, bass and kick then slowly evoles into a wide sea of emotions after the chords and percussions come in.The meditative pulsating groove floats like a thought drenched in all colours of hope and paves the way to the beautiful emptiness of ‘Unforgettable Moments’; Sub.Made creates an isolated and hollow place wich gets filled with deep rolling bass and melancholic piano riffs as the track unfolds. Derivate accompanies the EP with a deep bass/electro crossgenre remix of ‘True Time’.”

Devecly Bitte : Purple Line [SP15]

Devecly Bitte delivers a pure dub techno ep, his first for Sublime Porte. Subtly mixing ambient, experimental and roots dub influences he crafts a quiet journey through dub land with expertly constructed tracks.

Deep, driving rhythms and soothing aerial textures at play here. Beautiful melodies sometimes emerge from the grain, and the dynamic yet static nature of the tracks keep things in a nice and quiet fashion all the way.

The ep comes to a close with a remix from French dub techno alumnus Fingers in the Noise, who transforms the original into a warm excursion into a sunbathed field. A welcome departure from the frosty winter days.”

Stiver : Shine [SP14]

“SP14 marks Stiver‘s first release on Istanbul’s Sublime Porte after well received previous releases on Square Harmony alongside fellow Istanbul artist and collaborator Gantz. Encapsulating a heady mix of low slung bass, ominous vibes and fractured beats, Stiver is an artist fast rising to the heights allowed to him by his stark, powerful production skills.

Flickering open a portal into his world effortlessly with the sombre swells of Disappointment, the young artists vision instantly comes across as a consistent and powerful expression of emotions fused with forward thinking ideas. The scuttling textures and almost invisible yet ever present vocal samples of Even If effortlessly make way to the circular geometries of It’s similar they say.. with rhythms that morph and merge with one and other, taking the listener on a sonic adventure before landing fittingly on the glorious Shine, a beautiful stellar beacon of a tune that glows and shimmers much like the lights reflected on the Bosphorus. An essential release by Stiver, exploring both familiar and unfamiliar territories with a sharp eye for detail and a deep knowledge of the relation between sound and emotion.

Mon0 : Monolog [sp13]

“This release by mon0 is the artist’s fourth album, the first one on Sublime Porte, after an ep on Silent Season and several releases on Kreislauf and Test Tube. An expert in long tracks, mon0 here provides us with six beautiful journeys into sound all lasting around ten minutes.

The opener, the soothing Monolog, is a great moodsetter for what follows, and shows just how accurate the sensation of space is in this album : with calm rhythms and a simple pad flowing from highs to lows, an almost solid mass of sound encompassing deep Detroit slabs and white noise, seagulls on the coast and the sound of the wind across the sea, it dives deep and takes us on the ride.

Seaside is a fantastic drone cut, complete with electronic rain and steel drums being overtaken by demonic forces. It’s almost as if we hear an ancient sea god rattling on metal sheets and a thousand undead echo chambers chanting in unison a strange prayer in an unknown language. The fog then proceeds to slowly move away, and as we stray forward we uncover the shapes under a closer light.

As we wander inland, Autumn Clouds start to gather over our heads, a chilly wind sets in, passing through the trees and chiming in with the bells of a distant temple. Deep in the forest more rain starts pouring down… Guided by strange lights, we arrive near the village of a native civilization, and their drums start blending with the faraway sound of the bells.

Starting off slowly, Gray Skies is a more straightforward dub techno affair, but which manages to retain the same level of ambience as its predecessors. The track rests upon layers and layers of pads, with slow attack chords and very original percussions to boot, it takes its time to build a consistent atmosphere before entering into motion. Dialog continues on that note, with a noticeably darker atmosphere, and is definitely the more club-oriented of the bunch, but still has that keen sense of mood before functionnality, and it’s a true delight to hear.

Outro is the bleakest track yet : featuring a chilly drone as a center piece, and sounds akin to wind in winter, it evokes images of infinite lunar landscapes, grey and white mountains of dust slowly eroding, bursts of solar flares and the vast emptiness of space, with the blinding light of stars and planets pinned against the unfathomable black void of the universe. And you in the middle, wandering helplessly through infinity.”

B Mus : Nothing As It Seems [sp12]

“Following on releases for OC-Records, Aesthetic Circle & a 12” for Komplex Audio, B Mus kicks off the new year at Sublime Porte with his new album Nothing as it Seems, including remixes from Grad_U, Zzzzra and a version of our own.

‘Ocean Ground’ starts off with underwater dub chords in the style of The Nautilus Project, building a vast submarine landscape backed by a solid and hypnotic 808 drum pattern.
‘A Birds Migration’ goes deeper into dub territory, with profound metallic chord washes bouncing on the corners of the stereo spectrum.
‘The Dub’ displays hints of glitch and a great ear for sound design. The track keeps building, element after element, and feels ostensibly oriented towards a club setting, breaking up halfway just to come back stronger afterwards. The fierce chords and rotating delays are not just there for decoration either.
‘In Trust’ continues on that clubbier note, with heavy rhythm machinery going on right from the start, steady hihats and industrial sounds recalling the softer side of the Downwards discography.
‘Moirer’ feels more current, in keeping with the warehouse vibe, and features great feedback layering with subtler percussions at play.

Zzzzra stays true to the original Ocean Ground in that it keeps a distinctly squelchy vibe, but it transforms the original chords into weird flute-like instruments while adding a layer of superb dubby sounds to the mix.
Grad_U then goes for a much softer and hypnotic reincarnation of The Dub, which slowly and beautifully unfolds over the course of its 10 minutes.
Closing the release is a Sublime Porte version of In Trust, with rolling thunderous chordal hits in the background, supported by a stepping house rhythm and a great construction throughout.”

Spiral Dub : Perception [sp11]

“With Perception we welcome Spiral Dub on the label… Bearing strong electronic dub influences, this ep is a natural evolution from the sound of his first ep on Insectorama into a more uptempo and Detroit influenced production style.

‘Clandestine’ sets the tone for the rest of the release, with very sharp and edgy sounds, a thumping kick drum and bassline combo and a classic techno-ish hook that simply won’t leave your mind. The reduced chord sounds of the intro slowly morph into longer shapes, eventually transforming into a superb melodic pattern as the track evolves, with high pitched chords contrasting with slower-moving pads, creating an extremely well-balanced dynamic of sounds.

Continuing on this uplifting vibe, ‘Feedback Control’ takes over with a very soothing combo of a slow-attack chord and an almost 303-ish bassline bubbling in the foreground. Like the first track, the sounds constantly evolve to form increasingly complex rhythmic patterns, with a deeply nuanced understanding of delay placement and chord progression.

‘Perception’, although not immediately obvious, is slightly darker than the other two cuts, starting on a slower, heavier note with again a very visceral acid-like bassline, it takes its time to tell us its story. Though it may just be the most dancefloor oriented cut on this release, as it keeps building tension, playing with filters, adding layers of percussions. Never quite reaching the climax, it makes it a perfect track to build a set upon.

Dub techno-master Havantepe then closes the ep with a superb reinterpretation of ‘Feedback Control’, taking his very own spin on the elements of the original track, keeping the acid bass and adding some elements of his own. Holding the remix together is an organ-like pad and delay feedback of an alien origin, keeping a feeling of pressure throughout, a keen sense of arrangements and a deadly precision for crafting sounds which just feel right.”

Sublime Porte : Red Apple Remixes [SP10]

“After Oblivion Garden’s more experimental ep, Sublime Porte houses a new dub techno cut with Red Apple, featuring a number of remixes in various styles.

The original track would work as a strong set opener, and is very logically put in first place : it’s dub tech action at its finest, with the usual mid-track break, great filter work and a keen sense of groove. Lush reverberated chords and a ghostly hihat-snare combo completes the picture. A very appropriate track for the summer.

Hakan Finn takes a radically different direction, with a broken dubstep-like rhythm, built around a stepping kick and beautiful nautical percussions. It is also more reduced than the original, and while the chords are recognizable, they are neatly wrapped around the kick drum for maximum effect.

Beto Narme goes even further into dubstep territory, with a remix that kicks in at a steady 136 bpm. His very percussive style is here matched with a lot of talent to warm house-alike pads and gritty chords to much effect. With it’s broken structure and great sense of rhythm, this is one remix that will work wonders in the club.

Taking a more submarine approach, with bubbly sounds and long reverbs, Subsky‘s remix sets a very relaxed, chilled out mood, despite the upbeat rhythm and very smart construction. Joined halfway by a beautiful Rhodes-like pattern, this remix is definitely the housier of the bunch.

Finally, the Flatliners remix takes the drum n’bass route, providing a very refreshing take on the original, bringing back a lot of memories of good old jungle records, mixed with the warm dub-like sensibility of the original track, keeping a very roots bassline and spring-reverbed chords layed over classy vocals. The most surprising track of the release for sure…”
