db-Maui : Die Sterne und das Unicorn EP [BRQ152]

db-Maui is a new addition to the Broque roster and on his EP Die Sterne und das Unicorn he got us hooked immediately with five tracks, each of which seems to have inhaled its own piece of club history. The chords of ‘So Pretty’ (feat. Herr Michels) are driven by energetic vocals and roll funky across the dancefloor. Its very tight production wouldn’t seem displaced in a Joris Voorn set. With ist slightly distorted vocals, the melodic electro sound of ‘Sterne’ exudes a wonderful retro charm reminiscing of the likes of DMX Crew and IF. Ist marching ‘Mondmann Edition’ comes with subtle acid lines and transforms the spirit of the track into a playful peak-time banger. The longing vocals of deep and melodic ‘You’ combine Pampa-esque rave pop with melancholic club romance to create a small masterpiece, while ‘Unicorn’ is once again a little more percussive and direct, dancing towards the sunrise with a deeply embraced TB303 in its arms. Each of the five tracks has what it takes to be a club hit in its own way and seems to have been polished with great attention to detail. The phrase ‘no fillers, just killers’ probably was invented for this EP. One wonders why we are learning about db-Maui only now. From Ruhrpott with Love!”

Claudio Solis : How Long Is The Night [NSM002]

“Nihil Sine Musica is back, this time with a new album signed by the Chilean minimal maestro, Claudio Solis. Dark and immersive, this release calls for introspection on the dancefloor. Three well-crafted remixes complete this wonderful journey. As always, it’s free to download, but there’s also the possibility to donate for a good cause.”

Tim Susa : Four Signs EP [BRQ149]

Tim Susa’s new EP is just as personal as his debut album ‘1982’, which was titled after the year of his birth. On the one hand, the Four Signs EP is a fun-loving statement of strobo-fogged dancefloor escapism, driven by the power of the bass drum and a love for deep tracks that always seem to walk a fine line between reduced techno, deep house and vivid awareness of house music history. On the other hand, the four new tracks tell stories of interpersonal relationships, and more specifically, of four traits that can quickly turn a positive relationship into a toxic one. While ‘Control Freakery’ reminds of the engaging and trancy Border Community sound, the percussive ‘Entitlement’ loses all trimmings and is a straight-forward, no frills march onto the dancefloor. The EP gets lighter on its feet again with ‘Projectionism’, a shimmering piece whose hooks circulate dreamily around their own axis and occasionally wink to the likes of John Tejada. It gets more oldschool with the dry bassline of ‘Emotional Reasoning’, which is embedded in shimmering chords full of warmth and deepness. By now at the latest, everyone on the dancefloor should forget all thought about what can go wrong in human togetherness and be dancing intimately and united towards the sunrise.”

Nour & Friends : A Tous Petits Pas [Pertin-nce 095]

“I met Nour on Soundcloud maybe less than a year before Covid kicked in. She is a music lover and often re-posted some Pertin-nce tracks so we started chatting a bit and i found out that she was a singer. We agreed to make a collaboration. Things were complicated for various reasons on both sides of our lives so it took all that time to take form but hey: better late than never, we even managed to get remixes…”

Tim Susa : 1982 [BRQ144]

Tim Susa’s sound on his recent album is as personal as its title, which marks the year of Tim Susa’s birth. His debut album 1982 seem to be no less than a monument, dedicated to his very personal journey through techno history. It is unmistakable that Tim’s heart beats especially for the heyday of dark shuffled techno throughout the 90s. Produced on a mix of analog and digital devices, the tracks revel in the sound of dancefloor legends like Dave Clarke, whose Red series seems to reminisce more than once on the album, Luke Slater or Gez Varley. The latter’s minimalist proto-anthem ‘Quo Vadis’ seems to resonate again and again, too. Like Tim, the tracks seem to feel most at home on dark, foggy and strobe lighted dancefloors. Moments of deepness keep popping up though, as tracks like ‘A Feather’ show, that reach already out into the current millennium. In a similar vein, the wonderfully industrial-tinged electro beats of  ‘Leaf Blower’ spread a lot of industrial dancefloor confusion without having to resort to a straight bass drum. In between retrofuturism, history lessons and techno old school, 1982 always manages to simultaneously look ahead and make you want to go back in time.”

The Moment KLKTV : Be A Bridge Remixes [BRQ142]

The moment KLKTV consists of Alejandro Fournier and Michael Rittner. It was able to successfully appeal to a large fan base with their album Be A Bridge last year. So we dared to take two pieces from the album and have them edited. The result was two remixes with very different approaches: Dapayk Solo gives the originally stomping ‘A Walking Miracle’ an even straighter, more technoid note, whose disco-reminiscences can hardly be overheard. The track literally glitters in a sequined dress under the full moon and drives onto the dance floor at peak time. Mathias Kaden, on the other hand, takes over the harmony, energy and tact from ‘Ser Puente’ in order to lose himself in it and finally surpass himself. Its quiet, melancholic warm deepness expresses the reflective mood in which the piece was written. The name of the piece, as well as the whole album, has become more and more of a program these days. Let’s not give up, keep building bridges to bring people back together.”
