Mustatunturi : Giehkirnjarga [BC58]

Mustatunturi is a mysterious artist who hails from Russia, and has been producing music for a very long time – this is nearly all we know. He informed us of his being inspired by living in the Far North, snow, ice and the polar lights of the Rybachy Peninsula, from which the title of this work is derived. Sometimes, however, as many other RP releases have proven, knowing less about the artist and their intentions only serves to place the focus completely on the music. So, on BC58, what do we hear?

Deep, dimly lit soundfields that seem to recall minimal electronic works from Robert Hood, Plastikman and certain Chain Reaction wax. Driving grooves anchor a glistening, lonely city filled with silhouettes of industrial structures and streetlamps that only seem to illuminate the lazily falling slanted rain and detritus. There is a cold distance at play here, between artist and listener – a deliberate wall, beyond which sits a void that longs for human touch but never quite knows how to accomplish it.

Many elements of Giehkirnjarga are classic drum machine and synthesizer sounds from all eras of techno records, and in this way, the album feels as if it is not quite modern, but a recently unearthed archival recording from twenty years ago. A perfect passenger for night drives and oily neon sign-lit bar windows, leather seats and voyeuristic Polaroids…longing and self-imposed exile.”

Tom Rimshot is a new face at Recycled Plastics. He specializes in making dedicated tracks for both dancefloor and deep listening purposes, but when he’s not turning the Yamaha QY70 into rhythmic quicksand, you can call him Brian.”

Screener36 : Le Jour Se Lève [BC52]

Screener36 is a talented man named Victor, who resides in France and makes blippy squeaky trax that tickle our lobes and move our feet too. Spacious, funky, clean – Screener36’s debut for RP brings to mind lots of lovely things, like Amber-era AE, CiM, Bochum Welt and even a little early Metamatics. Whatever your preference, you’re sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, warm basslines and positively lush pads. A nice apertif for summer nights, supported by a very special Coppice Halifax remix and three more bonus trax on the CD-R!”

Coppice Halifax : Antauen [BC46]

“Sometimes, music makes itself, or at least it seems to. Antauen began with inspiration striking Argentinian producer Matias Bagato (aka Orson Throb, and one of the minds behind Temiong Recordings) to remix the Coppice Halifax track ‘Antu’ from Radians (RP4). This mix was simply too good to let it fall by the wayside, so within a week of hearing it, we drafted the help of French producer Zwei Kreise (previously known as Axs) to fill out what would be a spontaneous single. Coppice Halifax went back to the source sounds for ‘Antu’ as well, bringing into existence ANTAUEN, a heavy new track that slices through the original audio with a white-hot laser, ready to storm the decks. Once the leading single and the supporting mixes were laid out, tangents began to manifest, and both Zwei Kreise and Coppice Halifax went even deeper into ‘Antu’ to excavate three more mixes: ZK’s being a low-res nod to vintage game soundtracking, and CH’s being a 40-minute drone-techno monolith with a washed out reprise. These experimental extras are only available as bonus tracks on the CD-R version of Antauen, which fully adds up to 71 minutes of new sound for your ears to process. Grab BC46 and thaw yourself out in deep space today.”

101 : (Para)Normal Life [BC44]

101, perhaps more well known by his dub techno alias Giriu Dvasios, has been a quiet but potent source of solidly crafted braindance in the last few years. Having released three previous 101 albums (they’re all fantastic) at his own Cold Tear imprint across the sea, RP gave him the secret handshake that allowed us to import this fantastic hardware funk jam to you dear people. What follows is a tightly produced record filled with many of the classic staples of the bedroom techno scene – vintage drum machines, acid lines with added squelch, firm basslines ready for your bins. Nothing unexpected, but that’s exactly what’s to be expected here at RP. Of course, the most defining element of 101’s work is his ear for melody, and you’ll find plenty here!”

Canvax : Condense [BC41]

Canvax hails from Enschede, Netherlands, and brings his fresh style of dub, house and electro peppered electronic music to Recycled Plastics with the absolutely essential Condense album. Previously appearing at Body Control and having performed live at Gogbot Festival in 2014, Canvax’s music is a glossy minimal techno that seems informed by all sorts of influences, and yet quite unique at the same time. Canvax tracks are sometimes created during a train commute, and the music feels steadily propulsive in the same way, moving at a driving pace through subterranean tunnels and sunny pastoral landscapes. ”

Brother Blue : Green Cloud [BC38]

“After his wildly well-received Royal Secret single, Tim Gray brings us the first full-length album as Brother Blue: Green Cloud. Melodic stabs, hazy pads and rumbling bass are the order of the day with Green Cloud. Faithful to the staples of the dub techno sound, but not afraid to get a bit textural and gritty as well. Rough in all the right spots, yet still soft enough to invite you in, Green Cloud is a superb near-80 minute jaunt through Tim’s stylish production approach. A rich techno record just in time for the humidity of Spring! ”

Brother Blue : Royal Secret [BC37]

“Tim Gray hails from Portland, Oregon, and although many of you may already know him for his stellar releases as Ethernet at Kranky and Tanuki House at Occult Research, he debuts a new project at Recycled Plastics: Brother Blue. Brother Blue is Mr. Gray’s outlet for dub techno, pure and simple, and it delivers on that front in spades. Tim’s right at home with his machines and the evidence is in the sounds – deep, round basslines hugging clean-cut beatwork to make dancefloor-friendly grooves that still manage to sedate you at home. Layers of blue reverb that settle over watery synth drones and spattering chord stabs like a soft rain. Here, on his debut EP (which is a not-inconsiderable 50+ minutes long) Brother Blue establishes his intent with a cut taken from his forthcoming full-length (Gradual Brightening), and backing it with two excellent non-album cuts and a massive 20+ impressionistic remix from Coppice Halifax.”

Zzzzra : Vive La Lenteur [BC34]

“One of our absolute favorite techno artists, Zzzzra, has finally landed at Recycled Plastics. It is both a thrill and an honor to present you with Vive La Lenteur, an organic and sprawling techno album that isn’t afraid to get a little loud. Zzzzra’s music is some of the most unique out there today, taking nods from dub, minimalism and experimental music, and concocting a fiercely personalized blend of electronics that really don’t sound like anyone else.

So, what could be better than seven new Zzzzra cuts for free? How about a double album? That’s correct – the limited edition CD-R version of Vive La Lenteur is over two hours in length, filled to the brim across two heavy discs with seventeen tracks, including three remixes by Coppice Halifax, Zwei Kreise and Christonia5. This is Zzzzra’s first double album, and our first 2CD set since Mr. Acid’s Acid Affairs compendium. This is one of the coolest techno records you will hear this year – don’t sleep!”

Textural Being : The Sixth Gap [BC30]

Textural Being is a name that many of you should know by now, if you’ve been keeping up with who’s who in the current dub techno scene. Having released several fantastic works on labels such as Cold Tear, Deep In Dub, Energostatic, ZeECc, Auditory Cortex and Cold Fiction, among others, Mr. Being is now moving on from the moniker, transitioning over to a new project simply called aspect. Thus, The Sixth Gap is (in our humble opinion) not only one of his best excursions to date, but also one hell of an album to close the book on the Textural Being name.

The music is deep, moody and evocative of its namesake with swirling soft textures in spades. Groovy bass drums anchor the rhythm in a fog of floaty chords, their constant thumping a ghost of some long-forgotten deep house memory. What Textural Being evokes so well here is an air of familiarity while simultaneously sounding fresh and interesting. In a genre that is no doubt overflowing with homogeneity and monochrome, The Sixth Gap offers a vibrant atmosphere of just what good dub techno could and should be. Backed by a stellar remix cast of Axs, Ohrwert, Yan Olsen and Coppice Halifax, and limited to just 50 CD-Rs!”
