“The Argentinean dub monkeys are back! After being included in the compilation Explorations In Dub (2013), their guest appearance on the Red Star Martyr’s album Time for Tea (2014) and the release of their own album Simona (2015), the brothers Mauro and Federico Salina from Mentoza (ARG) are back with more vibrations.
Their new album is entitled Sun Is Dub and includes eight musical dub-works. Compared to their previous works, their 2019 sound is much more mature, which is normal for every artist who respect his work and strives to evolve.
Starting with Navidub and following with Combination (with a vocal sample of the classic Indian singer Shruti Katkar) the album is a journey into the dub sounds and the cultures of the world. Sometimes melodic and organic, other times rhythmical and heavyweight, the dub is to be heard in all eight tunes of the album. The last track Simona, is a reference to their previous album, newly re-done ft. Unidub Estereo.”
“This will be the first official Elijah Minnelli release. The song and A-Side Bebé Durmiendo Cumbia (Sleeping Baby Cumbia) is a melancholic yet lighthearted UK interpretation of the South American cumbia genre. The track intertwines a plodding but solid rhythm section with enchanting faux-accordion melodies and falsetto nonsense vocals. Elijah’s strong reggae influence along side the yearning for experimentation and musical variety shine through in this release. The B-side is a traditional if not slightly psychedelic fully live dub take of the A-side, also performed by Elijah himself.”
“Album Body Solo from Russian project Iiney, abstract-experimental dub released under number 150 on label Simphonic Silence Inside. Body Solo includes 8 songs of which two songs are original from the Iiney and six Remix versions from friendly music projects such as Skoork, Substituent and Vehjora. All compositions can be attributed to the search between the abstract sound of cold dub-techno and high-frequency experimental music. Says Dmitry Iiney about his new work: ‘…Left alone, the body, born in the shadow of the felled tree of life, feeds on the rays of black suns. The eternal source returns to life by SIPS of oxygen that excites the calmed-down consciousness. A simple, seemingly creeping pace of life breaks the motif of a new dawn. Animals, birds, people, all frolic in streams of moisture, clots of the heady day, all meet the horned God. Quietly, casually, the body takes a new form…'”
“Dub Riots were formed in 2008 in Athens, Greece. They have been featured on a few compilations on Dubophonic (Explorations in Dub 2013, Legal Rmx 2016 and Reggae Sunjam Vol.I 2017 and Vol II 2018) and also on the Greek label Reggaewise with their first EP State Of Life in 2013.
Having performed live as a dub duo all over Greece, but also in Cyprus, Belgium and Switzerland, it was about time to release their second EP and their first one on the label, doing their own dub-manipulations of some of the greatest reggae anthems.
On this release they meet Indamouse aka 3voice, another member of the Reggaewise crew based as well in Athens; a selector and producer influenced by the Jamaican soundsystem culture and the UK stepper style. Alongside the mystical sound of Bluez on the melodica, they offer a fresh conception of well established tunes like Creation, Rat A Cut Bottle and A Still Tongue, tribute to the foundation artists of reggae music. We hope you enjoy them!”
“The Dubwegians where founded in the UK back in 2010, when Gary had the idea of starting a dub band. He, therefore, approached his old school friend Richy, whose guitar skills were always thought highly of. He just wanted to play bass in the band and not do any producing.
Gary remembers: ‘We tried to capture the energy of a live band. In the absence of a drummer, it was a struggle for us to use a software, trying to capture the original warmth of analogue dub. It was a real learning experience; listening and trying to emulate these dub masterpieces. We have never done dub producing before and were slowly realizing some of the techniques used.’
South of the River Clyde includes 5 instrumental tracks; dub reworks of some great roots reggae masterpieces, produced back in 2011 with love and lots of passion. Richy played melodica and keyboards (and also guitar on “Sun is shining Dub), Gary played bass and covered all other sounds and production, using a laptop to overdub and edit their takes. Give thanks to Robert McWilliams for granting us the license to use the photo of the river Clyde in the artwork.”
