Mark Ge : Your Blues Are Rough [NS044]

“Mark Ge is a musician and writer from the North-Eastern United States. His first EP includes a collection of lo-fi bedroom recordings and one studio recording. Most of Your Blues Are Rough is just Mark Ge singing and playing guitar. The lo-fi quality really brings the listener and these tracks to a more intimate setting. ‘Brother’ and ‘The Other Side’ share a similar aural joy found in early tape recordings from the Mountain Goats. ‘Stephanie’ on the other hand is eerily similar to Casiotone For The Painfully Alone with drum machine and simple synth melodies. ‘The Road’, the only studio recording on this release, sees a more polished sound and additional instrumentation from Mark. Additional production on tracks 1-3,5-6 by Tim Dwyer.”

“We went to Denmark for a week, rented a house there and invited all our artists. Most of them came and enjoyed a week full of jams, recordings and fun. The result is a wonderful compilation of 15 songs.”

“Nick Rivera (Michele Sarti’s solo project) was born under a bunk bed in a victorian house in Hackney, London. Born in Cagliari, Italy, Michele started playing drums in a number of rock bands, slowly developing a strong interest in more experimental and free-form styles of music. The new approach led him to rediscover the french horn, the instrument he studied for years but never used on any of his projects. He also started toying with lots of different instruments like guitar, trumpet, glockenspiel, percussions, synths and loop machines. His first personal project was a free reinterpretation of the music from german composer Kurt Weill, directing a band featuring banjo, piano, wind instruments, flute and percussions. In Italy he collaborated with Bron Y Aur and Franklin Delano, and after moving to London with Sunny Day Sets Fire and Oh Atoms. He also plays as a stable member of the lo-fi folk band Takoma. Nick Rivera comes from Michele’s desire to play something as natural as possible. In his own works is music that would be ‘close to the image of a bud who sees the first light, the sounds of wood, nocturnal bugs, broken branches, birds, coppers, sliding water, shadows reflecting lights and glades in the forest… and everything that happens in the galaxy next to ours’.”

“Russian duo The Rare Plants Garden is beatmaker 813 and Nienvox, two fellows that made a good list of solo and cooperative appearances via Bump Foot, Dusted Wax Kingdom, 813’s own Pop Errors Gallery, and just recently Error Broadcast and Project Mooncircle. From this genealogy one might expect THE RARE PLANTS GARDEN to sound just like the other Russian duo here at 12rec., 2010’s high-flyer Monokle & Galun. However 813 and Nienvox concentrate on psychedelic left-field Pop music, banning the razor-sharp future funk of 813 completely from The Rare Plants Gardens selftitled debut EP, making the six tracks suspicious being brainchild to Damon Albarn rather than Flying Lotus.”
