Pk Jazz Collective : Safe From Harm [Netlabel Day 2017]

“О музыке надо не говорить, музыку стоит слышать. Так и с новым творением Pk Jazz Collective. Safe From Harm, названный по названию одного из хитов Massive Attack, включает несколько кавер-вариаций на гремевшие лет двадцать назад Happy Mondays, и уже отмеченных Massive Attack. Но его прелесть не в этом, а в лирике. Где нет собственных текстов и используются стихи поэтов середины 20-го века, промышлявших на ниве подростковых размышлений о жизни. Песня ‘What If?’

Dog, Paper, Submarine : TROUBLE ON EARTH [none]

“Formed in Malmö, Sweden by Martin Månsson Sjöstrand (vocals and guitar), Emil Engblom (bass) and Carolina Carlbom (drums and vocals), Dog, Paper, Submarine’s third Small Bear release may be their catchiest and most immediate yet. Recalling the sound of indie-rock’s golden era, the band have been favourably compared to the likes of Guided By Voices, Pavement and Sebadoh, whilst retaining a recognisable sonic identity of their own. Packing 8 songs into 20 minutes, Trouble On Earth veers from propulsive, fuzzed-up rock to janglier, sometimes more downbeat fare, making unexpected detours but always packed with inviting melodies. Existing fans of the band (and frontman Martin’s lo-fi side project This Heel) will not be disappointed, as everything that has made previous releases great is present here, with enough fresh twists and turns to make this record a vital addition to their catalogue.”

Mastermind XS : Keep on moving [DPH025]

Mastermind XS is a dub-project from Saarbrucken/Germany, created by Daniel Stephan (guitar, bass, keyboard, programming, sitar) and Heiko Petry (vocals, lyrics, melodica, keyboard). Their music is based on a solid dub foundation: heavy basslines with conscious lyrics and deeply rooted dub & reggae with an interesting twist, integrating many influences such as electro, ethnic music, drum/n/bass and even indie or punk. Their sound unites different styles, which hardly fits into one single genre and are always exploring new musical spaces, combining their Ableton skills and live instruments, forming a unique ear-candy-mixture of grooves.”

Nanaki : Dandelion Radio Session [Small Bear Records]

“The Nanaki session sees Mikie, guitarist of manx alt-rockers Postcode, revisiting material from the early days of the band, in fact it is the setlist from their first gigs. Mainly consisting of tracks originally found on the now unavailable debut album ‘Fashion Is The Enemy Of All Art’, the music found here often exhibits less of a post-rock sound, being closer in some ways to post-punk. As well as being an opportunity to present improved versions of older material and to introduce it to a new audience, the session was intended to provide something of an insight into the Nanaki live experience of days-gone-by. Although it may prove difficult to listen to the EP in a small, smoky venue, to best experience this record it is recommended that it is played at high volume.”

Dog, paper, submarine : Signal From Kepler-22b [Small Bear Records]

“The follow-up to last year’s eponymous EP, Signal From Kepler 22b comes hot on the heels of two solo releases from DPS frontman Martin Månsson Sjöstrand under the ‘This Heel’ banner earlier in 2015. Completed by bassist Emil and drummer Carro, Dog, Paper, Submarine deal in fuzzy, lo-fi, melodic indie-rock of the sort that journalists once liked to refer to as ‘skewed-pop’, comparable to the likes of Guided By Voices, Pavement, Lilys and Elephant 6-ers like Neutral Milk Hotel but with an identity all their own. ‘Signal From Kepler 22b’ retains the charm, energy and joy that made last year’s self-titled Small Bear debut one of 2014’s great records for those that heard it, whilst in places veering off into spikier, more angular and discordant post-punk territory. Pair this with the recently-released ‘This Heel II’ EP and we promise you’ve got a perfect soundtrack to the summer!”

Tigerberry : Spirit Kit [SCL143]

“The first band’s full-length album was compiled from the original songs captured between 2009 and 2012. It depicts the development of their distinctive sound and the starting point. The title Spirit Kit shows the idea behind the recording: each song itself is a key to a particular spiritual mood. The soundscape was designed in a very spontaneous and natural way. Nobody planned to release this record, and yet it became the organic 8 track statement that had been gathered from a vast band’s catalogue of singles, outtakes and demos. Serious changes and re-recordings were excluded on purpose to deliver the purest feel and tension behind the music. Remastered by the wizard from Binomial Records. The beauty of layering and reserved power reveals itself in an unexpected way through repeated listening.”

Фиорд : Третий тайм [SCL140]

“Here is the third release of the songwriter Фиорд (Fiord) from Moscow. Третий тайм (The Third Half) continues the tradition of the first two releases: mechanically instrumental parts, almost recitative singing, a kind of harmony and intricate lyrics.”
