Various : Heavy Dub Vol. 3 [CTR097]

“It is our birthday! And we’ve been in business for 8 years now. We continue our tradition of presenting you with a new volume of our Heavy Dub compilation series.

This year’s Heavy Dub features a few exclusive tracks that were not released anywhere before. First of all it’s a remix of Giriu Dvasios track ‘Dūno Upė’ done by Dublicator, a well known dub techno producer. Then there is a collaboration between Giriu Dvasios and a Lithuanian folk signer Eglė Česnakavičiūtė under the name of Dausos. We also have an exclusive track by a producer from Belarus known as Special Zip, who’s EP we released a few months ago. And of course the rest of the tracks are as good as it can get 🙂

“The Lost Pieces in this collection were composed between 1988 and 1992. Some have appeared on limited edition multi-artist compilations. Others were not created for any particular recording project. Instead, they documented and somehow externalized moments of personal transition in ways that only music can do. Often I’d lose track of these pieces shortly after they were recorded. Then, months or even years later, I’d be sifting through boxes of tapes (many left unmarked, a bad habit that continues!) looking for something else and would be surprised to rediscover a piece I had composed in a moment of private inspiration. I would feel a strange sense of time shifting as the flood of emotions that originally infused the music would be unleashed once again. Now that these lost pieces have been found, for me they take on a new and interesting life together, one that was conceived unconsciously in separate yet interconnected stages over several years.” – Steve Roach, April 1993.

We have a gift from one of the most interesting artists of the contemporary Russian dub-techno scene, a surprise release from Heavenchord Reshapes.
The reason for the creation of this release was the tracks that are deeply settled in the soul of the author.
Showing his vision for these tracks through musical experiments, music was continued in different electronic genres. However, while listening to Reshapes is felt deep the author’s love for dub-techno sound, this is the whole Heavenchord. Occur : Syrup [OCR2]

“Syrup is the third official Occur release, and the band’s full-length debut. Clocking in at just over seventy minutes, Syrup siphons out a colorful array of sound-play from a surprisingly minimal hardware setup. Improvised live, with no overdubs, on two analog monosynths, one analog polysynth and two analog drum machines, the recording sessions were subsequently finalized with one last coat of paint via software post-processing. Despite Dropper being released as OCR2, Syrup was in fact recorded directly after Drum, chronologically.

Sonically, Syrup shows Occur in a lethargic, almost drunken and drugged mode, with notable references to screwed-and-chopped hip hop, smoked out dub techno and psychedelic synthesizer jaunts that hang like discreet curtains in one moment, and fall down a flight of Berlin-school stairs in the next. Syrup is often a thick, foggy experience, wading through gelatinous oceans marked only by irradiated meteors crashing into the melting waves. Evident are the band’s influences things like Autechre’s Amber and Oversteps albums, Cylob’s Cylobian Sunset, early Deepchord 12″s and platEAU.”
